NASA Successfully Launches Roman Space Telescope on SpaceX Falcon Heavy



NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has successfully launched from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.


The launch took place on August 30, 2026, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. NASA later confirmed that the spacecraft separated from the rocket’s second stage and began its journey toward its planned orbit about 1 million miles from Earth.


The Roman Space Telescope is designed to observe the universe in infrared light and conduct large surveys of the sky. Scientists will use its observations to study topics including dark matter, dark energy and planets beyond our solar system.


The spacecraft will spend the coming months traveling to its planned orbit while NASA teams prepare and test its systems. Once operational, Roman is expected to provide a large amount of data that can help researchers better understand the universe and its evolution.


The mission is another major step in NASA’s efforts to expand our understanding of space and support future astronomical research.
