Trump Presses Apple to Rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America

 


U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly contacted Apple over a proposed change to the name of Lake Ontario on Apple’s digital mapping services.

According to U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Trump directly approached Apple and asked the company to use the name “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario on its maps.

The development follows an executive order signed by Trump that changed the name used by the U.S. federal government from Lake Ontario to Lake America. The change applies to U.S. government usage and does not automatically determine what Canada or international organizations call the lake.

Google Maps has already adopted “Lake America” for users in the United States, while Canadian users continue to see “Lake Ontario.”

Apple has not publicly confirmed that it will make the same change. Burgum said the company could update its mapping service following Trump's request.

The naming dispute comes during heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada. The issue has attracted attention because Lake Ontario is shared by the two countries and has long been known by its existing name.

For now, the situation remains developing, and Apple’s final decision will determine whether its U.S. mapping service adopts the proposed name.
