Can Trump Legally Rename Lake Ontario?


The short answer is: Yes for USA, No for Canada.


1. Inside USA:The President can direct the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to change the name for all federal documents and maps in the United States. This happened before with Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America proposal.

2. Outside USA: Lake Ontario is shared with Canada. Canada will continue to call it Lake Ontario. International bodies and Canada are not bound by a US executive order.

3. Google Maps Rule: Google Maps shows the official name based on the user's location. In USA it may show Lake America, in Canada it will still show Lake Ontario.

Google follows the BGN. If BGN officially updates the name, Google will show Lake America for US users. For users in Canada and other countries, it will show Lake Ontario or both names like Lake Ontario (Lake America).
