 Monterrey has advanced to the 2026 Leagues Cup final after defeating Club América 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.

The semifinal was played at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with both Liga MX clubs battling for a place in the championship match.

The first half ended scoreless, but the action increased dramatically after halftime.

Monterrey took the lead through Diego Rossi early in the second half. Club América responded with goals from Ramón Juárez and Alan Cervantes, turning the match around.

Monterrey then received a penalty, which Lucas Ocampos converted to make the score 2-2. 

Neither side could find another goal before the end of regulation, sending the semifinal to penalties.

Monterrey kept its composure from the spot, converting all five of its attempts.

Club América's Alan Cervantes missed his penalty, sending the ball over the crossbar. Monterrey ultimately won the shootout 5-4.

The victory sends Monterrey into the Leagues Cup final, where it will face Toluca on September 6.

Club América will instead play León in the third-place match.
